FAQs

About Activities FAQs

Everything in regards to activities

Q: Can I ask an organiser questions before joining their activity?
Q:

Yes. There are two ways you can do this. If it’s a question that other members might be interested in, you should post a comment on the Activity page. This is like asking a seller a question in eBay or posting a comment on a blog. And, as in eBay, your question and the organiser’s answer may be posted publicly (so that everyone doesn’t ask the same question). If it’s more of a private question, or you simply want to have a ‘conversation’ with the organiser to get to know them, the private messaging system is the way to go (click on their profile and write them a message).

Q: Can I change the details of an activity I’ve organised (e.g. time, date, venue)?
Q:

Yes. Simply open the activity in either “activities i organise” or “my calendar” and change it however you like. At the moment, the system doesn’t automatically notify all the other participants. We are currently working on this. You’ll need to manually notify everyone of your change.

Q: Can I get to know another member before meeting them in real life?
Q:

Of course! Every member has a public profile. That’s always a good place to start. The objective of MaMyDa is to get together with like-minded people and do stuff. And the best way to do that is to use your profile to give people a clear idea of who you are. In other words, member profiles tend to be informative and honest. Once you’ve done that, you can always have a ‘conversation’ using the private messaging system. (Just click Messages in the Communication section.) It’s amazing how well you can get to know a person simply by chatting with them online.

Q: Do I have to accept everyone who wants to join my activity?
Q:

No. You’re in control of who joins. When someone asks to join, you can check out their profile (and the other activities they’re involved in), maybe even have a chat with them. Then go with your gut feel. If you don’t feel comfortable with them joining, simply remove them from the activity.

Q: How can I make sure my activity gets a lot of attention?
Q:

To begin with, make sure you post it in the right activity type, and be specific with the location. This should ensure that your activity will be seen by people who tend to browse. To attract the attention of people who search, just try to think of all the words they might search for. For example, if you’re organising a local running club, be sure to use words like, ‘running’, ‘jogging’, ‘club’ and ‘fitness’.

Q: How do I ask to join someone else’s activity?
Q:

Once you’ve found an activity you want to join, simply click the “I’ll come” button, and you’re on the way to having fun. While the organiser can decline your request, most activities are open to all-comers, so their organisers are more than happy to accept anyone who wants to join. That’s the point! It’s all about having fun with like-minded people, after all…!

Q: How do I find an activity that I can join?
Q:

You can browse by category or location, or search by a particular word (such as the specific activity type and your suburb). Most activities are open to all-comers; all you have to do is ask to join.

Q: How do I invite others to join my activity?
Q:

Currently you can’t directly invite people to activities – this function is COMING SOON. In the meantime, you can alert members to your activity via the internal messaging system.

Q: How do I know I can trust another member?
Q:

Whenever you meet someone new, online or off, you have to use your best judgement. When you chat with someone at a shopping centre or a nightclub, you use your instincts to judge whether you can trust them. The same applies here.

Q: How do I organise a new activity?
Q:

Simply click on ‘Create Activity’ in the left-hand navigation bar.

Q: The Activity Type field normally auto-fills, but this time it won’t. What do I do?
Q:

If the field doesn’t auto-fill, it means that you are creating a new Activity Type. You may want to check in the list of existing Activity Types that their isn’t something similar (such as Yachting for Sailing) as this will ensure that as many people as possible find your search. Each day, MaMyDa will be alerted to all new activity types and make a call as to whether the new Activity Type should stand alone or be merged with another existing Activity Type

Q: What do the icons next to an activity stand for?
Q:
  • The lightbulb icon next to an activity title means this is a recommended activity. The activity can be adopted and members become the organiser and can then find activity buddies to go with them.
  • The building icon next to an activity title means the activity has been created by a commercial member. The activity can be adopted and members become the organiser and can then find activity buddies to go with them.
  • The rainbow icon next to an activity title means the activity has been created by a non-profit member. The activity can be adopted and members become the organiser and can then find activity buddies to go with them.
Q: What happens when I “adopt” an activity?
Q:

When clicking “adopt this activity”, it effectively copies the activity data over and becomes your activity – however you can still edit any part of the activity should you wish. From that point your activity can be found by others in the search. We recommend you then do a buddy search and invite other members to your activity.

Q: What if I can’t make it to an activity I joined?
Q:

If you absolutely can’t make it, you should go the activity and click on “No Thanks” – this will take you off the Yes list. You should also send a message to the organiser that you have changed your mind in case they are really counting on you. But remember, if you pull out of activities frequently, you’re probably letting quite a few people down (and those people may rate you poorly in MaMyDa). This means you’ll eventually be invited to fewer activities.

Q: What if I’ve organised an activity, but I can’t make it?
Q:

If the activity can still go ahead without you, you should contact everyone who’s participating, and let them know you can’t make it. If the activity can’t go on in your absence, you can cancel it. But please remember that if other people have confirmed that they’ll be there, cancelling the event will really put them out. Although it’s not an enforced rule, it’s considered poor netiquette to outright cancel an event without a really, really good reason. And remember, if you bail out of activities you’ve organised, you’ll find it more and more difficult to get others to accept future invitations.

Q: What is a “recommended activity”?
Q:

A recommended activity is denoted on the search results pages with a lightbulb icon. The activity has no organiser, so you can “adopt” the activity and become the organiser eg. if the recommended activity is a music festival, you might like to organise a group to go to the festival. If you’ve got any recommendations of cool or interesting activities or events that you would like to see on MaMyda, let us know!

Q: Will people I don’t know see my activity?
Q:

Yes. By default, all new activities are publicly viewable unless the activity has been set up as a Private activity.

About Groups FAQs

Everything in regards to groups.

Q: Can I have a Private Group?
Q:

Yes. If you create a private activity, you can create a private group. While the name of the group will show up in your profile, no other users can click through to the details of the group unless you have invited them to one of the Private Groups activities. That is, anyone who you invite to an activity organised by the Private Group can see details of the Private Group. Tip: If you ever create a public activity as part of the private group, all details of the Private Group become public from that point on. Best to create a new public group for your public activities.

Q: Can I send invitations or messages to group members?
Q:

You sure can! Group organisers need to go through to the “Manage” tab on the activity then hit “messages” or “invitations” as appropriate. There are functions to message all attendees and group members. FYI, you can also invite non-MaMyDa members to join your group by simply putting in their email address.

Q: Can the group change organiser?
Q:

Not yet. However, we are working on this function.

Q: How do I create a new group?
Q:

Currently groups can only be created by creating an activity first ( we are working on standalone groups for the future). It can be done at one of two times. You can either create the group at the same time as you create the activity (you will be prompted) OR you can go to an existing or past activity, select “MANAGE”, then Group and Add Group. Make sure you put in all related interests and descriptions so members can find your group.

Q: How do I create an activity for an existing group?
Q:

Firstly, only group organisers can create activities for groups. The Group Organiser needs to go the group details either from their profile or left hand nav bar (Groups I organise). Once there, click on the group summary to go through to the group details, then click “add activity”. Last activity details will show up – just change them as appropriate. When you creatye the activity, make sure you invite people or tell the group attendees about the new activity (Manage then Invitations).

Q: How do I find groups on MaMyDa?
Q:

There are a couple of ways to find the groups you want. Firstly, check out your profile to see what groups are in your area and relate to interests you have nominated in your profile . This can be found in “Things that may interest you” then hit the groups tab. Nothing there? Go to the search bar and click the “GROUPS” button. Clicking search will show you every group on MaMyDa. Or you can target your search by area or interest then clicking search.

Q: How do I find people to join my group?
Q:

Once you’ve started your group, go and invite people to join it. That’s what members want! Go to the search bar and hit “BUDDIES”. Then use the search bar to find people who may be interested. For example if you have a started a bushwalking group, use the Buddy search to find other members with bushwalking in their profile. You can then go through to their profile directly and message them individually. If there are a lot of people you want to invite, copy and paste their names and do one invitation to them. Click “Manage” then “invitations” from the activity. Yep, we’re aware that it might be a bit time consuming but currently that’s the only way you can do it. We’re working on a better solution.

Q: How do I join a group?
Q:

When you join an activity, you automatically join the group if there is one. You can tell if there is a Group attached by “The Group” tab on the activity. This is great because you will be notified of future activities in the group. If you want to join a group, but not attend an activity, you can hit the group tab, then “join”. This will make you a group member but not commit you to any particular activities. When you join a group, the group organiser will be notified that you joined the group.

Q: How do I leave a group?
Q:

Simply go to the “Group Tab” on your group and press “LEAVE”. A reason box will come up – please give the organiser some feedback so they know why you left their group.

Q: What other tools are available to manage the group?
Q:

Check out the manage tab on your group. You can:

  • change the email notification settings so you know (or not!) when things happen in your group.
  • the communication tab allows you to easily message all activity attendees or group members.
  • the invitations tab allows you to send specific invitations to members/non-members to your activities.
  • the recurrence tab can be used to add activities that happen on a specific, regular time. For example, if you have weekly or monthly catch-ups, the recurrence function is perfect to set it up in one go.

About Profiles FAQs

Everything in regards to profiles

Q: How do I make my profile private?
Q:

You can’t make your profile completely private, but you can hide everything except your username and gender. But bear in mind that if you hide all your details, people won’t be able to get to know you. Even people you invite to your activities won’t be able to see your details. But we respect your privacy and respect your choices!

Q: How much should I say in my public profile?
Q:

As much as you’re comfortable saying. MaMyDa is all about you making the most of life. Living it the way you want. The first step is to be comfortable with your profile. Of course, the more you say, and the more honest you are, the better people will get to know you, which means you’ll probably end up doing a lot more activities.

Q: What are Tags and how do I use them?
Q:

Tags are a great way to keep track of your friends who enjoy the same type of activities. By tagging them you can find them quickly in myfriends. To create a tag, simply go into the text box below a friends details and input a relevant “Tag” name which you will recognise – it may be an activity type. Then go and input this same tag into the names of others who have the same interest. FYI, a friend may be tagged more than once as you may enjoy doing different things with them – just put a comma between the different tag names.

Activities (Private) FAQs

Everything about setting up private activities.

Q: How to set up a private activity?
Q:

Create an activity and follow the normal process. From the drop down choose to make the activity private. Once you finished setting up the activity and activated it you’ll be prompted to invite people to your activity. You can invite MaMyDa members using their username or non-MaMyDa members using their email address.

Q: Is a private activity really “private”?
Q:

Yes. Only the organiser and those people who have been invited can see the activity. It cannot be found by anyone, including the organiser and attendees, via the search bar. It only stays in the organisers/attendees profiles while the activity is live, then it disappears.

Q: Is a private group, really private?
Q:

Yes – but be careful. If a group only contains private activities, everything in that group is private. If a public activity is created within the private group, all group details are then publicly viewable via the public activity details. Nothing private can be found via the search bar – but it can be found via the back door of the public activity. The rule of thumb is. Don’t mix public and private activities within the one private group. Have two groups – it’s easier to keep them separate and avoid making mistakes.

General Functions FAQs

Existing and new functions of a more technical nature

Q: How do I change my notification settings?
Q:

Click on my settings in the left nav bar. In My privacy settings click on notification settings. You can choose how often you want to be notified about activities, messages and friendship requests. Q: How do I download my MaMyDa calendar into my mobile device and other calendars (e.g. Microsoft Outlook®)?
Q:

As long as your calendar application supports the ICAL standard, you can simply subscribe to your private ICAL file on our server. Just follow the appropriate link on the calendar page to do this. Most mobile devices with calendars support ICAL automatically. So do recent versions of Microsoft Outlook® (2007 and later). If your version of Microsoft Outlook® doesn’t support ICAL, you can get a commercial plugin that will make it. (Just Google ‘outlook ical plugin’.)

Q: How do I message another member?
Q:

There are two ways:

  1. From their profile, click “Communication Options” (in pink on the profile). From there, click “Write message”
  2. From the left hand nav bar, click on My Messages in the Communication section.
Q: How does the Ratings system work?
Q:

The Ratings System is there to give organisers credibility and to tell other members how much fun they missed out on! After each activity, attendees will be requested via email to complete a rating (1 to 5 stars) and make a comment about the activity. This rating, attached to the activity, will show in the organisers profile and an average of all ratings received will show on the organisers profile. We encourage all attendees to give organisers fedback via the Ratings system.

Q: The site looks funny on my computer. What browser versions does MaMyDa recommend?
Q:

MaMyDa supports and works best on, – Internet Explorer v6 and above – Firefox v2 and above – Safari v3 and above If you’re running a browser below these standards, MaMyDa recommends you go onto the web and upgrade. It’s very easy to find via google and is generally free and easy to do.

Netiquette FAQs

Please understand how your actions of no show can have a disappointing effect on the people involved.

Q: An organiser did not hold an event as planned? I’m disappointed. What should I do.
Q:

This is not on! Please contact MaMyDa via any of the details on the “Contact Us” link at the top of a page.

Q: What if I’ve organised an activity but I can’t make it?
Q:

If the activity can still go ahead without you, you should contact everyone who’s participating, and let them know you can’t make it. If the activity can’t go on in your absence, you can cancel it. But please remember that if other people have confirmed that they’ll be there, canceling the event will really put them out. Although it’s not an enforced rule, it’s considered poor netiquette to outright cancel an event without a really, really good reason. And remember, if you bail out of activities you’ve organised, you’ll find it more and more difficult to get others to accept future invitations.

Q: What if someone doesn’t show up to an activity I’ve organised?
Q:

Generally, people only accept invitations to join activities when they’re really interested. And MaMyDa members know that it’s poor netiquette to opt out of an activity without a really really good reason, even if they do notify the organiser and other participants before the day. And it’s a cardinal sin to simply not turn up!

Tips FAQs

Ways to make MaMyDa work best for you.

Q: How do I maximise the number of people at my activities?
Q:

There are a few things you can do:

  • Choose an appropriate Activity Type which many people already use in their profile. If you become too create with activity types, no one will find your activities in their search.
  • Use the “Buddies” Search and see how many people have the activity type in their profile. By choosing an Activity Type already used, these members will receive notification of the activity in the Activity & User Updates. If you create a new Activity Type for your activity, none of the existing members will receive it via the Updates only new members who choose the Activity Type when they create their profile. Try to choose from existing Activity Types to increase your chances of people attending.
  • Also use the “Buddies” Search to find people in your suburb/town. ie search by suburb or town. Just because they haven’t got your interest in their profile doesn’t mean they are not interested. They just don’t know it yet! Add these people to your list of potential Activity Buddies.
  • When you have your list of potential attendees, you can either invite them (Manage/Invitations in your activity) or message them. Tell-a-friend from your activity is also a good option.
  • Make sure you have a fully completed profile. No-one will join an activity if there is no photo, nothing about you and you have no friends on the site. You need to make other members comfortable by sharing (within reason) things about yourself with other members. Openness and honesty leads to trust.
  • Encourage attendees at your previous activities to complete a rating of your activity. If it’s a good rating, people will feel good about joining your next activity.
Q: How do I use my profile to best effect?
Q:

1. Complete your profile as much as possible especially,

  • Put up a photo and complete “something about me”. This will develop trust with other members.
  • Fully complete your “interests”. This will ensure you get notified of any new activities in your interest categories as well as get contacted by like-minded members via the “Buddies” search
  • Check the “Things that might interest you” section for activities, groups and users of interest. This is based upon a definable radius around your location. Half the work is done for you. Then it’s up to you….

Using Search FAQs

The MaMyDa search engine works just like the google search engine, except it doesn't search the net, only the MaMyDa site.

Q: How can I use the search to get people to my events?
Q:

Use the Buddy button and input keywords/interests that you think will be in people’s profiles. For example, if you have created a bushwalking activity, use the Buddy search to find people who have “bushwalking” in their profile. When you find them, make contact by sending them invitation or a message about your activity.

Q: How do I broaden or define my searches?
Q:

The broadest way to search is to not include any keywords in the search bar – just hit “search” and you will receive all MaMyDa activities, buddies or groups – depending on the button selected. To define your search, input keywords. The more keywords, the more targeted your search. Eg, Searching for just “music” will give you all music activities/buddies or groups across Australia. Searching for “music balmain” will just give you music activities/buddies or groups in Balmain. Start off broad, and if you get a lot of results, get more targeted.

Q: How do I find activities I’m interested in?
Q:

MaMyDa is a search site and we have designed things to help you. There are two main ways to find activities of interest. 1. Use your profile: Your profile will show you every activity in your areas of interest within a defined radius around your location. This is the fastest way to find activities you are interested in. As long as your interests are completed, we will give you the data. 2. Use the Search Bar: Click on the “ACTIVITIES” button and you are ready to search for activities. Simply clicking “Search” will show you all activities on MaMyDa. If you want to define your search, you can define it further by using keywords of location, activity type and/or date. Play with it – it’s great!

Q: How do I find people who like the things I do?
Q:

This is what MaMyda is all about. It’s as simple as this…. 1. Use your profile: Your profile will show you every member in your areas of interest within a defined radius around your location. This is the fastest way to find people who like the things you do. As long as your interests are completed, we will give you the data. 2. Use the Search Bar : Click on the “BUDDIES” button and you are ready to search for interesting people. Simply clicking “Search” will show you all MaMyDa members sorted by join date. You can even filter them out if they have not provided a photo! If you want to define your search, you can define it further by using keywords of location or activity type. Once you find someone of interest, click through to their profile and click options to send them a message.

Q: How do I use the search bar to find groups?
Q:

Joining an established group is a great way to meet new, interesting, people. 1. Use your profile: Your profile will show you every group in your areas of interest within a defined radius around your location. This is the fastest way to find groups you are interested in. As long as your interests are completed, we will give you the data. 2. Use the Search Bar : Click on the “GROUPS” button and you are ready to search for groups. Simply clicking “Search” will show you all groups on MaMyDa. If you want to define your search, you can define it further by using keywords of location and/or activity type. Once you find a group you are interested in, click through to the group details, check out who the members are, take a look at the past activities and then join up. Go on, take the leap…..

Q: How does the MaMyDa search work?
Q:

The search looks for words. Type in any word and if someone has it in their profile, activity description or group description, it will show up in the results. Eg. type in new in town or even just new in and see the results. If you want your activities, profile or groups to be found by as many people as possible try and put as many descriptive words as possible into your description. You can even put in surrounding suburbs into the description so anyone looking for activities in your surrounding suburb will still get your activity in their search results.

Why MaMyDa? FAQs

Benefits of using MaMyDa

Q: Can I use MaMyDa just with my current friends/social club/sporting club?
Q:

THIS FEATURE IS COMING SOON – Yes. You can make your activities private, so that only people who you invited can see them. In fact, because MaMyDa is a dedicated activity network, it’s the perfect tool for organizing your existing social networks. When someone accepts your invitation, it automatically displays in their MaMyDa calendar, complete with reminders about upcoming activities. And MaMyDa keeps track of who you’ve invited, who’s accepted the invitation, who’s declined and who’s yet to respond. What’s more, you can download your MaMyDa calendar into your mobile devices and other calendars, and so can other participants. So you’ll soon wonder how you ever did without it!

Q: How does it work?
Q:

Just browse or search our growing list of local activities for something that takes your fancy, and ask to join. Even better, organise your own activities and invite others to join.

Q: Is it free to join?
Q:

Yes. MaMyda is free for everyone. Later on, we will introduce a Premium membership and charge members a small monthly fee for those premium functions (but only after they’ve had a full month to try it all out). So tell your friends before that happens. They’ll get free membership too, and for every three who join, you’ll get one months free Premium Membership when it is introduced.

Q: Is MaMyDa just for singles?
Q:

No. Absolutely not. It’s for anyone who wants to get out and do stuff with other people. Many of our members are single, but they don’t join BECAUSE they’re single. Most MaMyDa simply because they’re very busy, and so are their partners, friends and families. So it’s difficult to tee things up with their existing social networks.

Q: Who is MaMyDa for?
Q:

It’s for anyone who wants to get out and do things with other people. It’s for busy people who want to make the most out of life, despite their time constraints. It’s for people who find it difficult to tee things up with their existing social networks, because everyone they know is just as busy as them! It’s for people who simply want an easier way to coordinate their social life. Or their social club. Or their sporting club. And it’s for people who just don’t know anyone else who wants to skydive (or play chess, or go for a run, or, or, or…).

Q: Why should I MaMyDa?
Q:

When you MaMyDa, you’ll always be able do whatever you want, wherever you want, whenever you want. If you’re into something your friends aren’t, you can MaMyDa to find someone else locally who is. If your plans fall through because a friend has to work the weekend, you can easily find someone on MaMyDa to take their place. Even at short notice. If you’re new in town, or on a business trip, you can still get out and about and enjoy social activities. (You can even MaMyDa to find a travel partner!) Or if you have kids and none of your friends do, you can hook up with other young families. Of course, it’s not all about making new friends. You might decide to use it with just your existing friends (or social club or sporting club). It’s far easier than to-ing and fro-ing with phone calls, SMSs and emails. Everyone gets their own private MaMyDa calendar, and you’ll find it becomes the hub of your social life. It shows all the activities you’re involved in, and you might even be able to download it to the calendar you normally use. (Check out the list of calendars you can download to.) You get reminders of upcoming events, and as the organiser of an event, you’ll always know exactly who’s coming and who’s not; MaMyDa keeps track of it all automatically.
